Inspire! What Great Leaders Do
The author is a passionate proponent of leadership as a calling to inspire others. And, by the way, we like the distinction he makes between motivation and inspiration. Why? Because our belief at Visible Applause® is that heartfelt tributes that honor achievement and achievers inspire encore performance. Our program designs are gratitude-based delivered from the highest positions in the company … which is inspiring. This approach is in contrast to incentive-based do-this-and-you-get-that programs. The characteristics of applause delivered as gratitude are different.
The author offers this explanation of the difference, “Motivation, which is based on fear, comes from the personality. Inspiration, which is based on love, comes from the soul.
When we attempt to motivate others we intend to cause behavior in them that achieves something we want. At its best motivation is an attempt to serve others in our best interest. When we motivate, we serve ourselves first; when we inspire, we serve others first”
